CIE Registration
A school must be registered as a CIE centre before it can offer CIE qualifications and present candidates for CIE examinations. Two types of registration are possible (see below). As part of both registration processes, applicant schools must undergo an inspection which concentrates primarily on the security of Question Papers and available resources such as laboratories, suitable rooms for examinations and a library.

Cambridge International Centre (CIC)
CICs fulfil the three functions of an examination centre (administration, security and payment). An annual registration fee is payable but this is waived if the centre had more than £5000 in examination entries (currently about 180 IGCSE subject entries) in the previous year. CICs have access to Teacher Support websites and the CIE logo for marketing purposes.

Cambridge Affiliated Centres
Alternatively schools may be affiliated to the NZ Open Centre (NZ100) managed by CIE’s Regional Manager, Simon Higgins. Affiliated centres carry out administration and security functions, while NZ100 performs the payment function on behalf of the school. An annual administration fee of £300 applies.  Affiliated centres have direct contact with CIE but there are some restrictions on the services they can access. Affiliated centre status is designed to allow schools to trial CIE and it is expected that these schools will eventually graduate to CIC status.

Deciding whether to become a CIC or an Affiliated Centre
This will probably depend on the number of candidates you wish to enter. Most schools choose to start as an affiliated centre and then graduate to a full CIC within two years.

Cambridge International Fellowship Centres
Each year a small number of centres worldwide are accorded this status as a result of their outstanding promotion and implementation of CIE. ACG Senior College, Auckland Grammar School, ACG Strathallan, Macleans College, Pinehurst School and Corran School have been granted Cambridge International Fellowship status.
